This painting has just been sent to Munich! I painted this in 1982 after an intense period of purist abstract expressionist painting exploration, leaning towards minimalism. This piece was a send-up of that period. I was obsessed with the voice and power and feeling of abstractionism, but was puzzled when ordinary people - meaning people w/ no particular feeling nor schooling for 'modern' art - couldn't see what all the fuss was about. And then seemingly from nowhere out popped this populist vein. So this painting's a send-up of the mythos of the starving artist - painted with the same vocabulary, gusto and immersion as the abstract pieces - and the self-popularizing that goes with the branding of an artist.
